NRISA launches its SMART program (Start Moving And Remain Trim)
ARISA’s monthly function was held on Sunday, 15th September 2013 at Northcote Seniors’ Hall. It was another achievement of its executive committee in its endeavour to entertain and enlighten the seniors.
The story of vision-impaired Karima touched the heart of everybody, at the same time reassuring that a strong willpower can overcome any difficulties in life, to achieve what may be beyond their imagination.
Born in Afghanistan, her parents came and settled in Delhi. Karima was growing normally along with her sisters when nature took a wrong turn and she was deprived of vision, before she reached the prime of her youth. Her parents were very understanding and wanted to protect her but she boldly threw away the protection, and with strong determination she proved to her parents that she can live independently.
Seeing her willpower she was given a ‘Guide Dog’ to achieve more independent life. Now with an intelligent and loving boyfriend Andrew on her side, she is running a business from home. Her life is an inspiration to all.
The President of NRISA Dr Santosh Kumar was again true to his self, bringing interesting information concerning NRISA and requested members to remember the 50th anniversary of the freedom walk by Martin Luther King Jr. who got his motivation from Mahatma Gandhi.
Entertainment was flowing throughout the program, connected with jokes by our smart MC Mr. Devinder Mamik. Popular Hindi movie songs made the audience swoon, presented by talented singers Mrs. Indu Verma, Mr. Cyril James and Mr. Bhatti. Mrs. Vijay Laxmi Shastri entertained the audience with jokes delivered in her inimitable style.
NRISA’s new SMART program (Start Moving And Remain Trim) was introduced towards the end. Miss Richi Kawra used an innovative Bollywood based Zumba to make the seniors move to her tune. Generally, it is not easy to get seniors twisting and twirling their bodies, but Miss Kawra achieved this through her talented teaching abilities. NRISA holds the SMART program events on 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month at 18A bent St., Northcote. All are welcome.
Vote of thanks was presented by NRISA Secretary Dr. Nalin Sharda. He thanks Dr. Santosh Kumar for his leadership and all the presenters for their fantastic efforts. He also thanked ABC TV crew, who had recorded the entire program. This recording was made in relation to Miss Pallavi Sharda, who spoke at NRISA’s program on 25 May 2013. Their aim was to get a flavour of the programs run by the Indian community, that encouraged Pallavi to dance as she was growing up in Melbourne, before making her foray into Bollywood. Excerpts of their recording may be used in ABC TV’s 7.30 Report in the near future.
